UNCUT’S ALL TIME TOP 200 ALBUMS

This month’s Uncut magazine lists what a selection 59 music writers, myself included, consider to be the best 200 albums of all time. I can only assume that the reason for this is that readers of all types of magazines seem to like lists – one of the most read posts on Just Backdated is my list of Who songs to make up a virtual ‘alternative’ best-of album – and/or that it is a cheap way to fill several pages since the contributors aren’t paid and record companies won’t complain about the album cover images used since it helps to promote them.
That said, I am staggered and a bit disappointed by the age of the vast majority of albums on the list. The top ten includes no less than eight albums from the 1960s (47 60s albums in total), in the 200 there are 89 from the ’70s and thereafter it dwindles down to 35 from the ’80s, 23 from the ’90s, a mere eight from the 2000s and none at all after 2007. So not one album released in the last nine years is worthy of an entry, not even those that Uncut would have nominated as album of the year. Also, I think I’m probably right in saying that if this list had been drawn up 10, 15, 20 or even more years ago, it would be pretty much the same.
This probably reflects the age of the writers polled but I also think it reflects a paucity of discovery on the part of younger writers. Either that or whoever compiled the list didn’t bother to ask younger writers. Or maybe they simply don’t listen to any new music.
The 50 albums that I chose are appended below, in order, with wherever they appeared on Uncut’s 200 in brackets after the artist. Uncut’s 200 appear below that. As you can see, 30 of the albums I chose were on Uncut’s list with the other 20 – quite a high number I think – not on the list. To be honest, it was quite hard, not so much choosing them as putting them in order, especially the further down the list I got. I probably missed one or two and included a few that, depending on my mood, I might not include next week or next month, as I told the guy from Uncut who asked me for my list. We were not allowed to choose compilations, otherwise it would have been different, though live albums were allowed. I think that if compilations were allowed there would have been many more albums by black artists (in my case 'best ofs' by Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and Bob Marley to name but four), and probably more female performers too.
